We all might need more hugs these days. Here’s a way to knit one!

Hug Wings is a reversible wrap that embraces your neck or drapes off your arms. This quirky shape is a quick knit, requiring only simple stockinette knitting, yarn overs, decreasing, and other basic skills. Use your crochet skills for an optional single crochet edging or add your own knit one as a finishing touch.

Hug Wings is flexible: adjust the yarn type and weight and gauge by choosing a needle two sizes larger than called for and create a design all your own. The sample’s lofty, light texture of alpaca creates a draped, lacy effect when knitted on larger needles, while its mate, a doubled springy superwash merino/nylon sock blend, clings like elastic. The sample uses approximately 153 yards (140 meters) of aran weight alpaca, and 410 yards (375 meters) of fingering weight wool and size 10 (6mm) needles, and the shawl measures approximately 59”(150 cm) long by 20” (51 cm) in depth.

Accessibility Note: This pattern offers an additional Low Vision pdf option, with Arial 24 point sans serif font in all black text and photo captions. It has no italics. All of the directions are fully written out. If there’s a chart included, there are also written instructions- the chart is not needed to complete the pattern.

Finished Measurements:
An asymmetric double triangular shape, measuring approximately 50” (150 cm) long, with a depth of 20” (51 cm)—this pattern is stretchy, so blocked measurements will vary.
Length and width of scarf wrap will vary according to your yarn choice and needle size.

Yarn:
Yarn A: Approximately 410 yards (375 meters) of fingering weight yarn (knitting with two strands). Suggested fiber content: wool.
Yarn B: Approximately 153 yards (140 meters) of aran weight yarn (knitting with one strand). Suggested fiber content: alpaca, silk, or mohair.

Note: This shawl pattern is easily adjustable should you choose to use more or less yarn, simply increase to more or less than 70 sts according to your yardage.

Notes for adjusting yarn and needle size used in this project:
• Use more yards of any weight yarn for a longer/wider shawl.
• Use more yards of a lighter weight yarn for roughly the same size as the sample.
• If using a heavier yarn, choose a bigger needle size in order to maintain the open nature of the shawl.
• If you’d like a warmer shawl, create a more dense fabric by choosing a needle size closer to the manufacturer’s suggestion on the ballband.

Sample Used:
Yarn A: 3 skeins Wool Addicts Love, 92% extrafine merino wool & 8% nylon, 137 yards (125 meters), 25 grams, color 0064 - Sunset
Yarn B: 1 skein Wool Addicts Water, 100% baby alpaca, 153 yards (140 meters), 50 grams, color 0064 - Sunset

Needles:
Size 10 (6mm) straight or circular knitting needle or size to get desired gauge
Optional: Size H (5mm) crochet needle or size to create a firm single crochet edging

Notions Required:
Tape measure
Row Counter
Tapestry needle
Blocking pins, if desired

Gauge:
14 sts = 4” (10cm) in stockinette stitch
Note: Row gauge will vary, with doubled fingering weight superwash merino, it was 24 rows to 4”, as merino is a springy fiber.
With Aran weight alpaca, a fiber that drapes, it was 15 rows to 4”.
