Horseshoes and Lozenges
This design features an 8-stitch, 8-row arch motif, stacked in a square grid down the wide spine of the shawl and staggered like bricks on the triangular sides. It’s amazing how a shift like this in a pattern repeat can change the look of a stitch pattern. Worked top-down, the arches become horseshoes on the spine, while the eyelets on the sides of the shawl create lozenge shapes. The shawl begins with a long garter tab to accommodate the stitches needed for the patterned spine and grows with four increases every right-side row—one on each side of the wide spine and one inside each side edge. The stitch pattern for the lace border at the bottom of the shawl transitions smoothly off the last row of the shawl’s main body and can be made as deep as you like, depending on the amount of yarn you have available.
