Easily recognizable by their iconic horns, these small venomous snakes spend most of their time buried in sand, keeping only their eyes (and the horns above) over the surface.
Not every member of the species has horns, so I included both horned and hornless head designs (and sew-on horns, in case you change your mind later), as well as two different versions for the body: straight if you are looking for easy mindless crochet or a freely posable snake; coiled if you’d prefer an unusual, challenging project and a snake in a perfect realistic pose without any wiring.
This pattern is available with both right-handed or left-handed illustrations in two separate pdf files.
Size
Straight snake: about 39 cm (15 ½”) long; coiled snake: about 18 cm (7 ¼”) x 13 cm (5 ¼”), if made with DK yarn.
Tools and materials
~ for a life-sized snake, DK yarn in a sandy color
~ crochet hook: 2.75 or 3mm/US size C if using DK yarn (or size that gives you a tight, no-gaps fabric)
~ safety eyes or cabochon eyes: 7.5mm/8mm for DK yarn (10.5mm for worsted weight)
~ if using cabochon eyes, glue to attach them
~ fiberfill stuffing
~ pair of scissors, yarn needle, stitch markers
~ optional (but highly recommended if making a coiled snake): row counter, pair of tweezers
Difficulty
~ head without horns, or with sew-on horns: easy
~ horned head: easy-intermediate
~ straight body: easy
~ coiled body: difficult
The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology (UK/Aus equivalents provided). It contains many in-progress photos, but also includes a text-only appendix for easy printing, if you prefer working from a printed pattern but want to save ink and paper.
Finished amigurumi made from this pattern are yours to keep or gift or sell, I only ask you to credit me as the designer in case you decide to sell them.
