Hiss
Jennifer Kent’s article on Double Knitting inspired me to write the pattern for a scarf I designed at least ten years ago as a present for a friend who had lost a cat. This pattern is a tribute to my cat George, and the sample will go to someone who loved George even more than I did.
The scarf I knit ten years ago was worked in Light (3) yarn while this one uses Super Fine (1). I wanted a wide and fairly long scarf, but I realize not everyone wants to invest the amount of time this takes so I have provided instructions for four different widths. The length is up to the knitter. The finished length is for the knitted sample.
When the scarf is half the length of the desired length, the colors are reversed and the cat heads are worked upside down so that they are right side up and in a different color when the scarf is worn.
I highly recommend that you read Jennifer’s excellent article before beginning this project. This pattern relies on the techniques she discusses. The Special Techniques section (with minor changes applicable to this pattern) and the recommended videos are from the Elemental Coasters pattern.
By the way, you may notice that the sample features several cats missing eyes or ear tips. I’d like to say this was intentional. I had planned on duplicate stitching the missing stitches, but I decided there are plenty of one-eyed cats and TNR kitties with clipped ears and they need representation too!
