There has always been a swallows’ nest in the lean-to garden of my grandparents’ house. Every summer I enjoyed watching the little ones grow, while trying to be discreet when I went to observe them so as not to disturb them. For me the swallow does not make the spring, it makes the summer, the beautiful evenings at the edge of the river, the rolls in the grass, the hours spent observing the frogs, the miget (a wine, sugar, and bread soup eaten during the very hot days of summer in the Marais Poitevin) of my grandparents and the search for the glow worms once the night is set.

I wanted to pay homage to these beautiful memories with these socks inspired by the swallows lined up on the nearby power lines. They are knitted from the cuff down with a heel flap. The pattern is not particularly difficult and uses only classic stitches with only one row knitted in two colours (using stranded knitting, like jacquard). The motifs are increasingly distant from each other, allowing the length of the sock to be adjusted without stopping abruptly fading seamlessly into the toe.

Sizes: S [M, L] to fit foot circumferences of 19-21 [21-23, 23-25] cm / 7 ½-8 ¼ [8 ¼-9, 9-9 ¾]”.

230 [270, 310] m / 252 [296, 339] yds of fingering yarn
(380 to 425 m for 100 g) in MC and 20 [30, 40] m / 22 [33, 44] yds in CC.

Sample socks are worked in Eline et Laine Tabi (75% merino
superwash, 25% nylon – 425 m / 465 yds & 100 g per skein), col.
Sakura (pale pink, MC) and Rose Trémière (darker pink, CC).

Circular needles or double-pointes, or your preferred needles to work in the round. : 2,5 mm / US #1.5

Il y a toujours eu un nid d’hirondelles dans l’appentis du jardin de chez mes grands-parents. Tous les étés je prenais plaisir à voir les petits grandir tout en essayant de me faire discrète quand j’allais les observer pour ne pas les déranger. Pour moi l’hirondelle ne fait pas le printemps, elle fait l’été, les belles soirées au bord de la rivière, les roulades dans l’herbe, les heures passées à observer les grenouilles, le miget (une soupe de vin glacé) de mes grands-parents et la recherche des vers luisants une fois la nuit couchée.

C’est à ces beaux souvenirs que j’ai voulu rendre hommage avec cette chaussette inspirée des hirondelles alignées sur les câbles électriques tout proches. Elle est tricotée de la jambe vers la pointe avec un talon à bande. Le motif ne comporte pas de difficulté particulière et n’utilise que des mailles classiques avec seulement un rang à tricoter en bicolore (avec la technique du fil tendu, comme pour le jacquard). Les motifs sont de plus en plus éloignés les uns des autres permettant ainsi d’ajuster la longueur de la chaussette sans arrêt brutal.
