Hedwig
Given to Harry by Hagrid as a birthday present in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hedwig is a large snowy owl with spotted wings. Owls are common companions for wizards, with the bonus of being excellent messengers. Hedwig is one of Harry’s closest friends and allies for the first six films. At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows—Part 1, she sacrifices herself to protect Harry from a Death Eater.
Worked predominately in the round, short rows add shaping to Hedwig’s chest area, while stitches are picked up and knit to create the legs and head. The tops of the wings are worked in stockinette stitch and the bottom is ribbed with a row of scallops made diagonally across the bottom edges. Her wings and tail feathers extend beyond the body to provide balance, while the legs support her weight. All pieces are stuffed at the end, and safety eyes and an embroidered beak add detail to this cuddly replica of Harry’s devoted friend.
Hedwig uses 1 ball of each color and size 14mm safety eyes.
