Sweet little hedgies waddle along the border of this soft and fluffy baby blanket. Generously sized and with optional fabric backing, this will be a go-to blanket for years to come! The Hedgehog Baby Blanket is worked from the center out, beginning with just 8 stitches and working up to a 40” (100cm) square blanket. The heavier weight yarn works up quickly, so you’ll be ready to use or gift this blanket in no time!

This is an intermediate level pattern. Knitters should have experience with stranded knitting technique, including long carries, and following a color chart. Knitters will also use the circular cast on technique basic increases for shaping. Since the hedgehog motif in this pattern calls for up to four colors, some knitters may opt to use the duplicate stitch technique.

The gauge is 17 sts and 30 rows over 4” (10cm) in Stockinette Stitch, blocked.

The Hedgehogs Baby Blanket is approximately 40” (100cm) square.

For this design I used Lana Grossa Cool Air Fine (50% Merino Wool, 28% Alpaca, 22% Acrylic; 262 yds/50g per ball), a washable wool/alpaca blend yarn. You will need 2 balls of Mint (#17) and Silver (#13) for the main colors, and 1 ball each of Red Brown (#10), Grey Brown (#11), and Black (#14) for the hedgehog border.

You will also need DPNs or 32” (80cm) circular needle for magic loop method, and a 40” (100cm) circular needle, in size US 8 (5.0mm) or size to obtain gauge. Finally, you will need a 40” (100cm) circular needle in size US 9 (5.5mm) or one size larger than size to obtain gauge.

If you choose to back the blanket with fabric, you will need a piece of fabric backing approximately 40” (100cm) square, a needle, and matching thread.

This pattern includes a full color chart, a two-color chart for optional duplicate stitch, and written instructions.
