Heartwarming is a lovely relaxing knit.

Knit from the bottom up and working predominantly in stocking stitch you’ll create a fairly large triangular shawl with a striking contrast border.

Beginning with just a few stitches your shawl grows symmetrically from the bottom point to incorporate garter stitch edges and a textured diamond design.

The main body of the shawl is relaxing with its simple stitches and easy to memorise pattern.

Additionally, every row of the pattern is written out in full, with row by row stitch counts, so if you forget where you are simply count your stitches and you easily be able to find your place again.

The transition from body to border is highlighted by a Vikkel braid after changing to your contrast colour and followed by a simple heart motif.

A second braid is worked before adding a knitted on garter stitch edge to match the side edges.

Including the colour pop along the top edge of the shawl means you can go bold with your colour choice and you get to choose how much of the colour pop is visible when you wear your shawl depending on your mood.

Yarn requirements

Colour 1: 100g / 400m Tencel 4ply in Silver Grey from Temporal Spin
Colour 2: 100g / 400m Tencel 4ply in Dark Grey from Temporal Spin
Colour 3: 100g / 400m Tencel 4ply in Rose from Temporal Spin

The recommended yarn is 4 ply / fingering weight but in order to achieve the marled effect in the main body of the shawl C1 and C2 are held together so you will be knitting at light DK gauge.

The contrast border is knit using two strands of C3 held together so almost a full skein is required for the border.

The sample shawl was worked using two strands of 100% Tencel 4 ply yarn held together which worked up as a light DK weight. Please see note below re yarn substitutions.

A note on yarn substitutions

The Tencel yarn used in this design has no loft and no stretch, it is super-smooth and has a beautiful sheen but it behaves differently to wool and other animal fibre based yarn so this should be taken into account when selecting your yarn.

If substituting with wool or other fibres you may need slightly more than 1 skein of yarn for the colour pop border. In which case you may wish to consider a two colour border. To avoid the stress of yarn chicken, I recommend allowing 45-60g for the first part of the border and 45-60g for the knitted-on edge which, by the way, would look great in a fourth colour and is the perfect way to use up partial skeins from stash!

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rows make a 10cm square in stocking stitch before blocking.

The suggested gauge and yarn yardage are those from the sample shawl but achieving gauge isn’t vital to create a beautiful shawl. I often think that with a shawl it’s more important that you’re happy with the fabric that you are creating.

However, your choice of yarn and needles will affect yarn yardage and you may need more yarn if your gauge differs from that specified.
