Heartstrings
Heartstrings is a richly textured, modular blanket built from rows of interlocking hearts that flow across the surface in a rhythmic, graphic pattern. Worked entirely in garter stitch, the fabric is dense, cozy, and wonderfully squishy, while the repeating heart motifs add visual interest without requiring complicated stitch patterns.
The blanket is constructed seamlessly using a modular approach—no sewing required. A Foundation of Twin Peaks and Corner shapes is worked first, with stitches held live. From there, layers of hearts are added directly to the blanket using a combination of pick up and knit (pu&k), knitting from stitch holders, and casting on new stitches. The hearts are worked in 33 layers, alternating between rows of five and four hearts, creating a staggered, tiled effect. The blanket is finished with picked-up edge pieces for a clean, integrated border.
Heartstrings relies on straightforward techniques and a consistent stitch pattern, making it an engaging project for beginning knitters who would like to explore modular construction and bold use of color.
