From the Chapter Description: The distinction between lace panels and lace is the same as the distinction between cables and cable-stitch patterns. In both cases, the former are worked on a fixed number of stitches, which can be delineated by two markers in the midst of a knitted piece, while the latter are worked on multiples of stitches all the way across the piece. Therefore lace panels, like cables, lack repeat lines. But if you are especially fond of a particular lace panel, there is no rule that says you must work it only once. You may work it as many times as you wish across each row, and make an allover pattern of it if this seems good to you. Alternatively, you may combine two, three, or more lace panels in the same piece of knitting, just as cables are combined in a fisherman sweater.
