This hat was inspired by a cabled sweater in a vintage pattern booklet. The sweater was modeled on both a boy and a girl, and titled “Most Likely To Succeed Boy” and “Most Popular Girl” respectively, because popularity = success in life, if you’re a girl. I cringed even as I was intrigued by the stitch pattern.

It’s the easiest cable pattern you’ll ever keep track of, too, as actual cabling occurs on only 1 row of 10. Features a nice deep ribbing to turn up over your frozen ears.

For an adult size hat, you can use any heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn. Malabrigo, O-Wool Classic, and Bartlett Yarns Fisherman are possibilities. For a child size, you might try using a light worsted weight such as Cascade 220 and size 6 needles. I made up a couple in 220 and Patons Classic Wool (not shown) and they were too tight for a grown up, but would have been perfect for someone under the age of 10 or so.

An update was sent out 10/30/11 that includes definitions of the abbreviations used in the crown shaping. If you purchased the pattern prior to the update, you can download the new version from your Ravelry library.
