The Haldogard pullover is the companion pattern to the Haldogard cardigan, both of which are based on a historical fisherman’s jumper from my home region Trøndelag. The sweater is worked top-down, seamlessly in the round, with steeks for the armholes and neck opening. It also features folded cuffs, with rib on the inside, so you can omit the cuffs if you want.

I hope you will enjoy this pattern, and if you need any help, please do not hesitate to contact me in my Ravelry group ‘Skeindeer Knits’. It’s the best place for swift support.

Yarn
G-uld New Zealandsk Lammeuld (100% NZ lambswool, 450 m / 492 yds, 100g)

Alternatives: Rauma Finull, Hillesvåg Ask, Vilje or Sølje, Sandnes Tove, Navia Duo, Holst Supersoft, Jamieon’s Spindrift, Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper weight, etc.

You will get the best result with fingering or sport weight non-superwash woollen spun sheep’s wool yarn.

Light yarn: (622, 702, 836, 924) (1023, 1119, 1227, 1332) m / (681, 767, 914, 1010) (1119, 1224, 1342, 1457) yds.
Dark yarn: (494, 606, 735, 858) (991, 1125, 1269, 1413) m / (540, 663, 804, 938) (1084, 1230, 1388, 1546) yds.

Needles
Gauge-size needles for body and sleeves, and 1 mm below-gauge circular needles for ribbed neckline, hem, cuffs and buttonbands.

The sample was made using 3.75 mm (US 5) as gauge-size, 2.75 mm (US 2) for rib, and 4 mm (US 6) for the stranded colourwork.

Gauge
24 sts x 34 (32) rnds = 10 cm / 4” in stockinette (stranded colourwork).

Sizes
(1, 2, 3, 4) (5, 6, 7, 8)

Garment bust: (77, 92, 107, 122) (137, 152, 167, 182) cm / (30, 36, 42, 48) (54, 60, 66, 72)”.

The sample is knitted in size 4. Although you can choose the amount of ease you prefer, I recommend wearing this with 10-20 cm / 4-8” positive ease (i.e., pick the size that is 10-20 cm / 4-8” larger than the bust measurement of the recipient).

Notions
8 removable stitch markers
A crochet hook about the same size as your below gauge-size needles.

Construction
This drop-shoulder sweater is worked top-down in the round, with steeks for the neckline and sleeve holes. The sweater is supposed to have positive ease with decreases towards the waist fits closer to the body. The cuffs are worked inside-out and folded up around the sleeves.

Note that steek stitches do not count towards your total stitch count. After steeking each armhole, the sleeves are picked up from around the arm and worked in the round, top-down in plain stockinette.

Bynæsetrøya
The Haldogard pattern owes its name and appearance to a historical fisherman’s sweater from Haldogard on Bynæset in Trøndelag, Norway. The sweater is dated to 1875 and was knit in red and black yarn. This is among only 3 preserved 19th century fisherman’s jumpers from Trøndelag, and was brought to America when its owner emigrated there.
