Grindstone Island Mittens
This mitten design was inspired by summertime visits to family on Grindstone Island, one of the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River. Fishing, boating, swimming, eel grass, zebra mussels, herons, wind, rain—through it all the river winds slowly, with a deceptively gentle current.
The thumb is placed just onto the palm of the hand which results in a comfortable fit that doesn’t distort the design. This mitten pattern calls for a corrugated ribbing cuff which is both attractive and cozy.
SIZES: This pattern is written in one size, adult medium. Additional sizes may be made by adding or deleting repeats of the pattern (in multiples of 5 stitches), and adding or decreasing the length of the mitten. The vertical repeat is 9 rows.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Circumference: 8 inches
Length: 11 inches, from cuff to tip
Fits: hands with a circumference of up to 9 inches
Changes to gauge or yarn weight, or adding length, may require extra yarn
