- THIS IS NOT A PATTERN FOR A GRANNY SQUARE! THIS TUTORIAL ASSUMES YOU ALREADY KNOW HOW TO MAKE A GRANNY SQUARE! * *
Is there anything more versatile than Granny squares? You can sew them together to make just about anything: bags, cardigans, cowls, even blankets. But did you know that you can make a whole top out of just two big Granny squares, and some optional granny stitching around the edges? It’s so easy that you don’t even need a pattern at all, just a quick measurement or two that can even be done on the fly as you’re stitching! How cool is that? I’ll show you how this works, with any yarn and any hook you choose. Gauge? We don’t need to stinkin’ gauge…
Stitches: Chain (ch,) double crochet (dc.) Single crochet (sc) for the edges is optional! Also, double crochet 2 together (dc2tog) can be used to close up any extra gaps, but again, totally optional
Yarn: Any. No seriously. I like to use up scraps for these, myself.
Hook: Any. Yup, again. As long as you’re liking the density/looseness of the stitches, you’re good to go.
Sizes: Can you guess? Yup. ANY! This is tailored to you, my friend.
Gauge: yeah, right ;)
NOTES:
Make sure you like the yarn you’re using, and make sure the hook you’ve chosen gives you the stiffness or the drape that you’re looking for. This is a really easy project, but you don’t want to decide halfway through that you should have used a different hook or that this yarn doesn’t feel good on you.
Also, if you’re using scraps, make sure you have an overabundance, or that you will be happy adding in a color you hadn’t counted on using. Just in case. We all lose yarn chicken once in a while.
