UPDATE! This pattern is now available in two sizes! The original shawlette pattern uses a single full sized skein with 6 mini skeins and the updated, full sized-shawl pattern uses three skeins!

NEW Full-sized Shawl version:

I’m delighted to announce the re-release of Granny at a Rave, now made with 3 full-sized skeins of yarn! This was specially reimagined in collaboration with Marina Hayes, owner of Yarn Matters, for the 2025 Dogwood Fiber Trail.

The stitches are all the same, we’ve just made her bigger and used a single CC to add in some subtle stripes at the end of the body and a nice wide stripe of linen stitch for the top edging. I’ve also added a video tutorial for the updated pattern! (The original shawlette pattern will remain available as a separate download—I may give that one a refresh in the future, but for now it’s a nice little time capsule that shows you how my patterns have evolved!)

Be sure to check out Marina’s knit sister shawl, too: Coastal Granny at a Rave.

STITCHES & TECHNIQUES:

  • Double Crochet (granny square)
  • Single Crochet (linen stitch)
  • Extended Single Crochet (instructions in pattern)
  • Color Changes (stripes)

GAUGE:

Rows 1¬8 should measure approximately 3” (7.5 cm) deep by 6” (15 cm) wide across the top (the long edge), unblocked. Gauge is not critical for this project, though, so just make sure you create a fabric that you like the look and feel of.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:

  • MC: Stellina Sock by CMS Supply Co. in Spring Dogwood (100 g, 400 yds (366 m)), fingering weight (1: super fine) yarn, 75% superwash merino, 20% nylon, 5% stellina, 2 skeins
  • CC: Fingering/Sock by Yarn Matters in Tempting Splash (100 g, 394 yds 360 m), fingering weight (1: super fine) yarn, 85% superwash extrafine merino, 15% nylon, 1 skein
  • C/2 (2.75 mm) and B/1 (2.25 mm) crochet hooks
  • stitch marker(s)
  • scissors
  • darning needle

Original Shawlette:

This is one of those surprise designs that wasn’t on my radar until the pattern was practically already written. I had a student come in one day wanting to make a granny square shawl and on my way out the door after class, I picked up a skein of yarn from a local indie dyer to make one myself because we more or less wrote the pattern in class! I ordered a coordinating set of minis two days later to add some extra fun to the party and the rest is history!

Worked in a mitered square manner, this triangular variation on the granny square works up quickly and almost effortlessly. You could easily add a second or third skein for a larger piece or you could simply keep adding stripes with the minis!

STITCHES & TECHNIQUES:

  • Double Crochet (granny square)
  • Single Crochet (linen stitch)
  • Extended Single Crochet (instructions in pattern)
  • Color Changes (stripes)

GAUGE:

Before blocking, within the body of the shawl, 33 sts and 17 rows of granny square stitches = approximately 4 inches. I aggressively wet blocked the long edge of the shawl to get it nice and straight so finished measurements were 42.5 by 17 inches.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS:

  • Flockin’ Sock XTRA by What the Flock Hand Dyed (100g, 464 yds) in Marsha Mellow Goes to a Rave (75% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon) or similar Fingering (1) weight yarn plus coordinating minis
  • C/2.75mm & B/2.25mm Crochet Hooks
  • Stitch Marker(s)
  • Scissors
  • Darning Needle
  • Glue for added security on tassels (optional)

Yardage estimates for each color:

  • MC: Marsha Mellow Goes to a Rave, 464 yds
  • C1: Neon Pink, 20 yds
  • C2: Neon Orange, 20 yds
  • C3: Neon Yellow, 20 yds
  • C4: Neon Green, 20 yds
  • C5: Neon Blue, 20 yds
  • C6: Neon Purple, 20 yds
