Granite Lake Shawl
This is the next pattern in the Showy Garter series and the first in the Garter in Motion e-Book. If you have not seen the free Introduction to Showy Garter e-book please download that as well. It has pages of tutorials and some starter projects that will make this pattern a lot easier to understand. There is also a blog post that has more details and photos.
Size and Shape
Make up of 2 long triangle, semi attached on the ends to allow for drape over your shoulder for a total length of 92”.
- Large Triangle: 52” x 24” blocked
- Small Triangle: 40” x 19” blocked
Yarn:
- Sock weight yarn with label gauge of 7-8 sts per 1” in stockinette.
- Knit on US 4 for a gauge of 5 sts per 1” in garter.
- Total yardage of approximately 900 yards. With 4 colors, 1 skein of each is plenty. The Spud & Chloe Fine used in the samples has only 65g /248 yds per skein.
Colors:
The shawl uses 4 colors: 2 main colors, a light neutral and a contrasting neutral. The contrasting neutral can be light of dark depending on your palette. We used a light gray and a brown in our samples.
- Sample 1: Blue and yellow as main, off white as neutral and brown as contrast.
- Sample 2: Pink and orange as main, blush as neutral and light gray as contrast.
Note that the raised Showy Lines that are so integral to the pattern, show better in light or bright colors.
Difficulty
Showy Garter projects are not difficult to knit. The techniques are straight forward. The tricky part with this pattern is recognizing the pattern on the knit fabric so you can knit it without looking at the pattern at all. Any issues are most likely to be knitting away with out paying attention and forgetting to stop and start the Showy Lines or decrease every 3rd row.
The pattern includes a mini-version swatch (also a great dish cloth) so you can test it before you start the larger shawl. Less experienced knitters can start with one of the simpler projects in our Introduction e-book. Please (please) download that first so you have the tutorials to reference.
