Gooseberry Shawl came together as an “any yardage, any gauge” project for some very special souvenir yarn in my stash. This tip-to-tip shawl pattern can be adjusted to almost any amount of yarn - just weigh it in the beginning, knit with increases along one edge until roughly half of yarn is used, then start decreasing!

Gooseberry is a comfortable small shawl full of texture inspired by the intricate shapes of the gooseberry plant. Its traveling stitches and cables mirror the graceful flow of leaves and vines around the delicate berry-like nupps. The edges are polished with built-in i-cord. The tips of the shawl are decorated with playful bobbles (this step can be skipped if desired). Directions are both charted and written out. Videos for nupps and cabling without the cable needle are provided.

Yarn

  • Any yarn from fingering to worsted weight range would work fine. Yardage below is an estimation.

  • DK weight: at least 220 yds
  • Worsted weight: at least 200 yds
  • Sample shawl, Terracotta: Lane Grawitz Fluffy G (79% cashmere, 21% silk; 328yds / 300m, 0.88oz / 25g), held double for fingering weight gauge, color 7860

Needles and Gauge

  • The gauge is not important for this pattern. Below you can see suggestions provided in stockinette, blocked. Swatch and pick the gauge and needles that give you the fabric you like.
  • Fingering: 27 sts and 40 rows in 4” / 10cm on US 4 / 3.5mm needles
  • DK: 23sts and 36 rows, US 6 / 4mm needles
  • Worsted: 20sts and 32 rows, US 7 / 4.5mm needles

Size

  • Size will change depending on your gauge and yardage. Numbers below are approximate and given for reference in fingering weight
  • Length 42.5 (54.3, 66.1)“ / 108 (138, 168)cm plus bobbles, adjustable
  • Width at the widest point 6.3 (8.1, 9.9)“ / 16 (20.5, 25)cm, adjustable
  • Shown in sizes large (terracotta color) and medium (grey)

Construction

  • The shawl is worked flat from tip to tip.
  • Increases made along one side on every RS row shape the first half of the shawl, and mirrored decreases - the second.
  • You can adjust the size of the finished shawl to your liking by making fewer or more repeats of the pattern.
  • The edges feature built-in i-cord.
  • Optional large bobbles can be added to the tips of the shawl for a more playful look.
