Gnomes Shawl
Gnomes, the fundamental earth spirits, are so often unappreciated. Completely different than the colorful garden gnome statues, these gnomes help maintain the earth, keeping the land fertile and helping to prevent earthquakes. This shawl pays homage to the humble (or not so humble) gnome. Beginning with garter stitch representative of plowed land, the border features twisted stitch “roots” on a reverse stockinette background. “Minerals,” in the form of beads may be added at the knitter’s discretion.
The pattern is charted only and includes twisted stitches. The method and placements of the increases are not detailed. It is left up the individual knitter.
The use of stitch markers for marking the center of the shawl and the border repeats is recommended.
Sizing -- Pattern as written includes 3 sizes (6, 7, & 9 repeats of the roots pattern). Size can be adjusted as desired by changing the number of garter stitch rows. Stitch count at the end of the garter stitch section needs to be a multiple of 30 stitches plus 26 stitches. The border (roots) is 35 rows total. For a 1 skein shawl, work the small or medium size.
Gauge as given is the gauge I got for my shawl. It is not imperative that you achieve the same gauge. Use a needle size that will result in a shawl you like. Bear in mind that changes in gauge will change the shape and yardage needed.
