Garterhouse
Charterhouse, an ancient public (that means ‘fee-paying and private’ if you’re not in the UK) school, albeit one that has some pretty fancy House Colours and plays footer instead of rugger in the Winter, huzzah, 3 cheers and all that, matron! (Read the astoundingly good and still exceptionally funny ‘Down With Skool’ by Geoffrey Willans and Ronald Searle for an expose of the British Public School and some of those terms might become clear to you!) OR, Garterhouse, a stripy, garter stitch based sweater that is textural and all about the proportions and a vague pun on Charterhouse (these puns are getting hard, you know).
So. Garterhouse is boxy and roomy and has bracelet length sleeves. It’s a very easy pattern to knit, enlivened with a bit of mohair for extra texture. You could leave the mohair out if you wanted and just use another colour. We used a DK / chunky mohair from Texere yarns but to be honest you’d probably be fine if you used Kid Silk Haze or similar, it would probably drape better if drape is what you’re after. We weren’t, we were after boxy. As for the other yarn, we went (again, is it getting boring yet?) with John Arbon’s Knit By Numbers, yes, we love it, no they’re not paying us to say that, we BUY this stuff from them. We’ve knitted it on bigger needles than you’d normally use for the Knit By Numbers as it’s just nicer that way in this stitch pattern.
So, what else to say? It’s stripy. The Knit By Numbers comes in 100g hanks. You will have leftovers. Knit a hat. We have plenty of patterns for those ;-).
