I love this rib pattern – it’s one of those stitches that’s beautifully simple yet looks incredibly effective. The texture adds a lovely depth to the jumper, making it a timeless knit that’s both stylish and practical.

For the shaping, I’ve set the raglan decreases one stitch in from the edge. On the wrong side, the two edge stitches are purled, creating a smooth finish that makes sewing up much easier. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference to the final look and most importantly the joining together.

There is one slightly tricky moment when picking up stitches for the neck. I like the stitch pattern to flow seamlessly into the collar, and while it takes a little care, the result is well worth it!

This jumper has been a favourite among knitters visiting the Skipton studio – so much so that many asked for an adult version. And now there is one! If you’d like to knit your own, take a look at the Kyle Jumper. And if you love the stitch but fancy a different style, there’s the Kyle Hoodie – a jacket version with a cosy hood.

Or, if you just want to try out the rib pattern, you can have a go with the Rice Rib Scarf. A great way to get a feel for the stitch before committing to a full garment!

CONSTRUCTION
The back, front and two sleeves are knitted flat from the bottom up in separate pieces and joined together. The sleeves are raglan.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing on the raglan sleeves, increasing. Joining seams. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
