Funicular
A “Funicular” is a rail car that is run by cables up an inclined plane, usually a mountain side.
Worked entirely in the round from the bottom up, the Funicular hat has inclined lines of colorwork that are formed entirely by short rows. Choose either a short ribbing, or a deeper, folded ribbing to frame the face and keep your ears extra warm. A pom pom and a bit of slouch make the hat both fashionable and fun.
Gauge: 20sts & 28 rows/4” (blocked) in stst on size 6 needles (or size to obtain gauge). Ribbing measures 28 sts and 28 rows/4” unstretched.
Finished Measurements: 22 ” in circumference; ribbing is 13.5” in unstretched circumference, Depth of hat is approx. 9” from ribbing to crown.
Materials:
1skein each of the Main Color (MC) and Contrasting Color (CC) in Madelinetosh Tosh DK (250 yds/skein; MC/CC1 shown in Charcoal/Begonia Leaf), or The Verdant Gryphon’s Traveller (270 yds/skein; MC/CC1 shown in Tulum/Melbourne), or
Approximately 130 yards of the MC (short ribbing will require less yarn), and 65 yards of the CC1 in DK or worsted weight yarn. Optional pom pom in CC2 requires 12-15 yards of DK or worsted weight yarn.
