This cowl is inspired by the beautiful cross stitch embroidery patterns of Germany that always remind me of Christmas.
Because of the nature of the design there are some very long floats. It will be necessary to carry the yarn across the back of the work. There is a very good tutorial on this and other stranded work tips here http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/FEATwin06TT.html Haven, who test knit this design for me said that she found that twisting the yarn halfway between the sections with long floats helped her keep the tension better. Another way to do this is to work the cowl “inside out” with the RS of the work on the inside. This makes the floats go around the outside and prevents them from tightening up.

So that the floats don’t keep catching when worn, this cowl is designed to be reversible with stranded colorwork on both sides. It is begun with a crochet provisional cast on, worked in the round and then the second side is worked by unzipping the provisional cast on, knitting the second chart and then finally the cowl is grafted together using Kitchener stitch. Alternatively, it can be finished with a seam of mattress stitch, but this will not give the same seamless, stretchy finish.
