Now, I’ll start by saying I’m not big on Valentine’s Day. Sorry, not sorry. This celebration is not traditional in my country, so I never related to it. In Iceland we celebrate the Men’s day and Women’s day separately, according to our old pre Christian calendar. Traditionally the men get good food and the women flowers. Funnily enough, those days land close to the international Valentine’s Day, at end of January and end of February, with Valentine’s Day right there in the middle. I’m thinking maybe people just need some extra loving during those darkest months of the year! Even though I don’t identify with this tradition of Valentine’s Day personally, I know that many people worldwide do. And hey, a day for LOVE, I’m all for that!
Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still had some more HEART patterns in me after the Heart-appa-looza that was the Yuletide pattern. These patterns didn’t fit with the stitch count for Yuletide though, so I decided to go for it and do a little Valentine’s pattern this year.
To ground this new design a bit within my own traditions and thus connect better to it myself, I decided to name it after our old Norse goddess of Love, Freyja. She was a real baddass, protector of women and helped with both birthing and fertility. She travels through the sky by a chariot pulled by two cats and can also fly when she wears her cloak of falcon feathers. She is not one to be messed with.
I know another badass lady that is not to be messed with, and that’s my little sister. Her name is also Freyja. She is simultaneously the most insufferable AND the most supportive, beautiful and funny person I know and I’m so lucky to have her in my life. I swear she is as strong as Freyja the goddess and I could not imagine my life without her. So, with my Valentine’s pattern I honour those two strong women that bring love to my life. I then made the Freyja table runner as a housewarming gift for my sister and her husband and I hope it will bring them lots of love, light and blessings in their new home.
The Freyja pattern itself is quite simple, the same Scandi looking plump hearts we have in the Yuletide patterns, lined up in three different versions. I arranged them in a way that gives a bit of a seventies vibe and I must admit I absolutely love my little FREYJA pattern, in all its simplicity.
Yarn
You can make all kinds of projects and use any yarn you like for this pattern.
I made a Freyja table runner as my original piece for this pattern and used a lovely Danish cotton yarn for it.
You can make it any length you like; I did 18 repeats for mine and it measures 95 cm on the length and 20 cm wide. For this project, you will need the following yarn, or something similar:
Alba from BC Garn, 100% organic cotton, 50 g = 160 m, and a 3 mm hook.
I used 2 balls of each color, dark blue for main color and bright red for the hearts.
Gauge
Approx. 22 ST & 22 rows = 10 cm or 4 inches, Using recommended yarn and a 3 mm hook in a basic mosaic stitch.
Abbreviations (US terms)
ST = stitch/stitches
SS = slip stitch
CH = chain stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
General Instructions
This is an ALL CHARTS PATTERN and comes with user-friendly charts for all three different Freyja designs.
All the designs are worked in repeats of 12 plus 3 stitches, so they all fit together. This way you can either just use one version for your project or mix them all together for a big blanket for example. size wise you can arrange the different patterns to make a project in any size you like. Be it cushions, rugs, purses or blankets.
The pattern can be worked both flat and in the round. For instructions on how to work mosaic crochet in the round, check out my YouTube tutorial #4 Beginners Guide to Mosaic Crochet – In the Round.
Note that if you work the pattern in the round, you just chain up a multiplication of the 12 ST repeat, without the 3 extra stitches we need to add when working it flat.
If lefthanded, you can follow the chart from left to right no problem, it´ll look the same.
Colors
you can either work this pattern in two colors only or follow any of the different color options included in the patter.
Special techniques
In this pattern we use a little extra trix to get smoother lines, this is explained both in the pattern itself and I also show you this in the Youtube video tutorial for Freyja.
