The pattern is written for double-pointed needles. The smaller size needles are used for the ribbing at the cuff. The stripes are knitting in just above the heel flap. Once the stitches are re-arranged to begin the heel flap, the Greek letters of the fraternity are worked in duplicate stitch. Then the rest of the sock is knit.
