Fossil Ferm is an intricate looking yet relatively easy to knit shawl made with two yarns. It is fully reversible. One side will highight Yarn A and the other will highlight Yarn B. Accordingly, you will need two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these combinations work well together.
The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. The size will depend on the numer of modules you want to knit. Fossil Fern is composed of two parts - a waxing and a waning part. Simply knit the waxing part until you have reached half of the desired length and/or until you have used up to 50% of your yarn. Therefore, you can use any yarn weight and needles you like and knit any size from a large shawl to a small shawlette.
I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and I used 660y/600m of each color (made with Schoppel Lace Ball 100 Alles Paletti using two strands at a time to achieve a longer color gradient combined with Wollelfe Pure 4 Play Radioactive Neon) for a shawl with the following measurements - length: 89”/226cm - depth 21”/53cm. I knitted another version usinig Picktheyarn Merino 4 ply Heavenly Dreams combined with Frog Prince 875y/800m of each color - length: 100”/254cm - depth 22”/5.
Fossil Fern is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join all the modules as you go. You will find photo tutorials on all the necessary techniques for joining the modules.
The general principle is fairly easy and you won’t have to look at the instructions once you have knitted the first few modules. However all instructions are given in written and charted form in case you want to refer to them.
This makes Fossil Fern a doable project for most knitters - definitely perfect for tv-knitting
