Your next act of handmade courage:

Bring the enchantment of the forest into your home with Forest for the Trees, a knitting pattern inspired by a love for crafting. This pattern transforms three childhood crafts into sophisticated designs through quick, easy knitting. Each tree showcases the charm of mindful making while grounding you in the big picture as you create. Perfect for seasonal decor or everyday charm, Forest for the Trees reminds you to balance the broad vision with the beauty in each detail.

Quick Highlights:

Idiom Love: The phrase, “can’t see the forest for the trees,” means being so focused on the details that one fails to see the bigger picture. This is one of my favorite idioms. What’s YOUR fave? Shoot me a DM and let me know! (It just might inspire another pattern!)
Decor: Do you love to decorate with your knitting? I’m slightly obsessed! These trees are adorable knit Christmas decorations, of course, but come on--they ARE evergreens, after all! They look great all year round!
Techniques: I-cord, working in the round on dpns, working flat on long circular, increase/decrease
Pattern: Written instructions with line-by-line progress, charts
Yarn Weight: worsted/aran; Fabric should be firm enough to hold its shape.
Options: 3 Tree styles, each in 3 sizes; 2 “burlap” Base sizes
Notions: Some unique notions are used in this pattern. There’s nothing expensive or unreasonable, but you won’t find everything at your LYS. In particular, you’ll need bamboo skewers and some sort of weight for the tree base.

Gauge:

• 18 sts and 26 rows/rnds = 4 in. / 10.16 cm in stockinette
• I used acrylic yarn and worked at a firm gauge, so my pieces hold their shape without blocking. Natural fibers may require blocking or smaller needles.
• Gauge is not critical, but the fabric should be firm enough to hold its shape. Yarn amounts will also vary if you work at a different gauge.

Yarn, Needles, & Notions:

Yarn:
• Red Heart Super Saver, 1 skein in each color, 100% Acrylic, 364 yd. (333 m)/198 g, or similar worsted/Aran weight yarn (CYC #4)
• MC (Trees): Frosty Green, Tea Leaf, and/or
Medium Thyme
• CC1 (Base): Cafe Latte
• CC2 (Beads & Decorations): Soft White

Ribbon Candy Tree: 13 (18.5, 22) yd. / 11.5 (17, 21) m in MC
Triangle Tree: 20 (24, 39) yd. / 18.5 (22, 35.5) m in MC
Accordion Fold Tree: 14.5 (25.5, 44) yd. / 13.5 (23.5, 40.5) m in MC
“Burlap” Base: 22 (27.5) yd. / 20 (25) m in CC1
Pom Pom (stuffing/support): 25.5 yd. / 23.5 m in any neutral-ish color
Knit Beads: 1 yd. / 1 m each in CC2

Notions for all styles/sizes:
• Pom pom maker: 2.5 in. / 65 mm; A yarn pom pom is used instead of traditional stuffing. It holds the skewer upright while filling the base. Use CC1 or any neutral-ish yarn scraps.
• Stitch markers (locking and ring-style)
• Bamboo skewers, 3 mm, 12 in. / 30.5 cm long (Skinny tree trunks!)
• Weight for tree base, about 38–40 g per tree: zinc washers (2 in. / 5 cm diameter), OR glass marbles
• Sharp scissors
• Tape measure
• Blunt darning needle
• Knife for trimming skewers (optional)
• Gram scale (optional)
• Low-tack tape, OR blocking mat and pins (optional for Ribbon Candy Tree)
• Embellishments (optional)
