The shape of this shawl reminds me of a jester’s hat. And since I am a huge fan of the Beatles, the name “Fool on the Hill” came to mind. In these difficult times we all need a bit of humor, courage, and some lightness to brighten up our day. I hope Fool on the Hill will help you to find this.
For Fool on the Hill you need two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these ensembles will do. The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn.
There are two sizes available: Medium and Large. If you want to use DK I would recommend you knit the Medium Version, unless you would like to get a super large shawl. I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and I used 900y/825m of each color for a Large Version (made with Schoppel Laceball and Laceball 100 using two strands at a time to achieve a longer color gradient: Mittelland combined with Türkismühle - length bottom line: 77”/196cm - depth 29”/73cm.
I knitted two Medium Versions: One with Wollbonbon Merino 4 ply Beerchen combined with Blue Moon 660y/600m each - length bottom line: 62”/158cm - depth 24.5”/62cm. The other with Lana Grossa Gomitolo Denim 0003 combined with 0008 620y/570m each - length bottom line: 61”/155cm - depth: 24”/61cm.
Fool on the Hill is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved. All instructions are given in written and charted form. You will find a lot of graphics and photo tutorials on the techniques of shaping and joining the modules. This makes Fool on the Hill a doable project for most knitters.
Happy Knitting!!!
