Flying Colours
Download the ebook on this page (4 cushions).
Flying Colours is a cushion based on a mathematical flexagon. It is made from 16 double-sided triangles which are joined so that the cushion can be turned into several different shapes. The version shown is knitted but it could also be made in crochet or fabric. It is really more a plaything than a cushion.
Some of the moves for this cushion are very easy but once you lose track of where you’re going it can take a very long time to get back again.
Many years ago we published a book of patterns called Twists & Turns. Some of its patterns were more popular than others so they were re-written in more detail and removed from the book. The book has not been available for several years.
Frustrating Flexagon Cushions contains four ‘cushions’ that were in that original book. Their common factor is that they can all be twisted and turned in some way. They are called cushions but they are really meant to be decorative, or for their novelty interest. Whilst it is perfectly safe to sit, or lean, on them they will not be particularly comfortable. They are very frustrating because they collapse, unfold, and get tangled, and can take a very long time to get back into shape.
WoolhelminaToo drew lots of cartoons of eggs for the original book (Eggcentricities) and they have all scrambled into this ebook.
The ebook also contains paper models to cut out to make the four flexagons.
