A flash of hot pink, afloat and reflective on the murky water surface. A suggestion of fluid texture beneath; gently swaying lake weeds.

Fly Fishing Socks combine rhythmic and intuitive knit/purl texture with a fun colour surprise at the cuff. Helical stripes then give way to a contrast cuff, reminiscent of a brightly coloured fly sitting on the lake’s surface, it’s colours reflected in the rippling water.

The pattern emerges over a 12 row repeat. This pattern is adventurous beginner friendly. The knit/purl texture is easily executed and straight forward to read in the knitting. These socks are also a great introduction to Helical Stripes. I walk the knitter through how to work the stripes, and include a link to a video tutorial for extra guidance.

This pattern will shine when using yarn that is solid, tonal, speckled or variegated! As always, use whichever sock yarn you are excited to use, while being aware that the detail of the pattern may be lost in very busy yarns.

This pattern is Cuff Down construction, includes 4 sizes and a gusset and heel flap heel construction. Because of the nature of the 6-st pattern repeat, there are additional size options for size 1 & 4 with regards to leg circumference; full details in the pattern. The Fly Fishing Pattern instructions are offered in both written and charted format and are mirrored for right and left socks.

Skills Required
Twisted German cast on, working in the round, knit, purl, slipping stitches, picking up stitches, increasing, decreasing, reading charts (optional), grafting together sts.

Materials
Sample Yarn Used:
1 x 100 g/437 yds (400 m), Sweet Pea and Sparrow Yarns, 85/15 Superwash Merino/Nylon Fingering weight, colourway Pickle Juice (MC) AND
1 x 20 g/92 yds (85 m) mini skein in colour Amaryllis (CC).

Yardage: 300 (350, 410, 460) yds/274 (320, 375, 421) m fingering weight yarn. Yardage is an estimate and is impacted by yarn used, knitter’s gauge, length of sock foot and/or leg knitted.

Suggested Needles:
2.5 mm/US 1.5, 80 cm/32” length for magic loop, OR 2 x 40 cm/16” length for the two-circular method, OR 2.5 mm/US 1.5 double pointed needles OR size needed to obtain gauge. Darning needle, cable needle.

Gauge: 34 sts/48 rnds = 10 cm/4”, in the rnd, in st st.
