FLORETT
A floret, or a foil in English, is one of three weapons in the sport of fencing. It’s a very thin sword that as a practice weapon goes back to the 16th century, when it was even mentioned in Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. The name floret comes from bluntening the tip with a knob, which makes it resemble a petal - a “fleuret” in French. The Florett shawl has lots of buds pointing out from the centre, reaching out towards the corners and looking like something between swords and flower petals.
Florett is a two-coloured shawl knit from tip to tip, with a straight upper edge and a pointy lower edge. The petals are shaped with short-rows, and it is knit in garter stitch. This makes it a simple project that anyone can execute, as long as you know how to make increases, decreases and how to slip stitches.
The first tip of the shawl starts with only a few stitches, but it increases on every second row at the edges and then decreases on every 4 rows at the centre. The petals are easy to make, once you get into the rythm you will know how to knit them by heart.
Florett is written for a locally produced Swedish yarn from the mini-mill Östergötlands ullspinneri. The yarns Visjö and Karamell are spun from finewool sheep, a native heritage breed that has a very soft and crimpy wool resulting in a fabric that can be worn next to the skin. The colourway Karamell is a gorgeous gradient yarn that goes through the colours about three times per skein. It can be ordered from https://www.ullspinneriet.se/.
Size: Approximately 190 cm wingspan after blocking.
Yarn: Östergötlands ullspinneri, 2 skeins (200g) Visjö white, 1 skein (100g) Ljus karamell, 300m (328yds)/100g.
