This insertion pattern is from 1886. I changed 2 purl stitches to knit stitches but that was all I changed. There are 19 stitches in every row and there are 18 pattern rows. Half of the rows are purl across except for the selvage stitches.
The swatch is 2.5 inches wide at gauge but any gauge will work.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, SK2P and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

34 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of this strip at gauge.
