Since the Stitch Anatomy Lesson in this issue of Cast On is about slip stitch patterns, I used one of my favorites for the hat band and mitten cuffs. I worked two samples; one using tones of the same color and the other contrast colors to show how important color selection can be.

The slip stitch bands, knit flat, are worked separately. Stitches are picked up on the WS of the cast on edge and then worked in the round. The buttons are decorative and for that reason, the pattern does not specify a specific size. I chose subdued buttons for the tonal hat and colorful pedestal buttons from Jul Designs for the contrasting colors hat.
