This combination of stitch patterns was used in 1912 Fleischer’s Knitting and Crocheting Manual, p.162 for a child’s sweater/coat. I re-imagined it as an afghan strip since the long vertical columns of the sweater looked good. Zephyr was the name of the original Fleisher yarn; I used a different yarn for my afghan strip. The swatch doesn’t curl, so blocking is optional.
The swatch is 8 inches wide at gauge blocked.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

70 yards of Bernat’s Handicrafter yarn will make 10 inches of a 34-stitch-wide strip at gauge.
