Anyone who has ever met me will know that I have to wear gloves every day of the year. The gloves I wear most often are fingerless crochet gloves (or mittens, wristwarmers or whatever else you want to call them). They are simple, practical and quick to make though they can easily be embellished to make them more fancy.

I have often been asked for the pattern but I make up each pair as I go along so there isn’t really a pattern as such. It is a method of construction that allows you to make gloves that fit you perfectly no matter what yarn you choose.

The instructions tell you all you need to know about making these gloves in your size and give some ideas for the embellishments you might add.

As you can see from the photos they can be varied in many ways. Some of the gloves in the photo look a bit scruffy because they have been worn for several years and been washed many, many times. Some of the shapes look a bit strange as they have moulded to the shape of my hands. The gloves are tight-fitting and stretch when you wear them so they stay tight round your hands and don’t get caught in things.

I was finally prompted to write up the instructions when I made the long turquoise gloves. I needed something to wear to a wedding and these 3-ply gloves fit the bill. Most of the other gloves in the photos are in 4-ply or DK yarn. You can use any yarns though I wouldn’t recommend anything thicker than Aran weight because it makes it difficult to shape the thumb.
