Fisherman’s Rib gives a lovely warm fabric, ideal for a hat. This pattern is for a simple beanie/toque hat, which knits up quickly in Aran/Worsted weight yarn, and features a neat cast on edge. It is knit in the round.

It uses the following techniques:
Provisional Italian Tubular Cast On
Fisherman’s Rib in the round

It is one size only, nominally adult, but it is a very stretchy fabric and will fit a wide range of heads. Measured un-stretched: brim circumference 48 cm (19”), body circumference 54 cm (21 ¼”), crown to brim 23 cm (9”); it fits perfectly and comfortably on a 57 cm (22 1/2”) circumference head.

The pattern is written, with links to videos for the special techniques, and with both written and charted instructions for the crown shaping.

It takes almost all of a 100 g skein of aran weight yarn, approximately 170 m (185 yds).

It looks particularly good in variegated, speckled, self-striping, or tonal yarns.
