In Ship of Magic, the first book in the Liveship Traders Trilogy by Robin Hobb, Malta is given a courting gift by Reyn Kuprus, though she is unaware that he considers it as such. It is cold outside and Reyn gives Malta his scarf, ablaze with precious flame gems, that opens to become a shawl when Malta puts it on to warm herself.
