Firn (feern) is a German word for old snow. It is ice that is at an intermediate stage between snow and glacial ice. This shawl is the perfect display of new, lighter freshly fallen snow and the harder, older condensed snow that exists on the tops of mountains.

This shawl is knit using a single strand of fingering weight to evoke the light, airiness of fresh snow in parts of the shawl and held doubled to convey the solidity of the harder, older snow beneath the new. The juxtaposition of the sections upon each other make for a super squishy and soft shawl to drape around your neck.

Size: 68 inches along top edge X 13 inches along center line. This is the blocked sample and as such, due to blocking differences, gauge differences, and knitter’s preferences, your shawl may be a different size.

Recommended Yarn: 2 colors of semi-solid to solid to slightly variegated fingering weight yarn. Single ply yarns are PERFECT for this pattern and add that extra touch of squish to the shawl.
