Field of Stars Shrug
I like to think of an aran shrug as a wearable blanket. This one is worked in Tunisian crochet, and I’ve included some texture in the form of small stars, with blocks of colour to add interest. The shrug is made in one piece, a large rectangle, which is then folded in half along its length and joined at the ends to make cuffs. The shrug has a honeycomb stitch border to prevent curling, and is finished with a simple double crochet (US single crochet) edging. Pattern is written in English and uses UK terms.

Field of Stars Shrug- Abbreviations (UK Terms)
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
st(s) - stitch(es)
Tps - Tunisian purl stitch
Tss - Tunisian simple stitch
Yo - yarn over
RS - right side of work
Honeycomb stitch - alternating Tss and Tps. First row start Tps 1, Tss 1, repeat across. Second row, start Tss 1(above the previous Tps), Tps 1 (above the previous Tss), repeat across. These two rows are repeated.
Star stitch - Insert hook under next 3 vertical bars, yo and pull through, yo and insert hook through same 3 bars, yo and pull through (3 new loops on hook). In other words, you are working a decrease and then an increase to keep the same stitch count. I have included a short video of this stitch here as I’ve used it for a few projects.
Bind off - work a slip stitch row after completing last return pass. Insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull yarn through both loops on hook. Repeat for each stitch until one loop remains. Cut yarn and draw through loop to fasten off.
Field of Stars Shrug- Pattern Notes
Pattern rows are Forward Pass instructions only. Follow each row with a Return Pass.
Return Pass instructions: Ch1, yo, pull through next 2 loops on hook; repeat from until 1 loop remains on hook.
Instructions in brackets are worked the number of times specified eg x2.
Instructions marked by an asterisk * are worked once, and then repeated the specified number of times.
The colour changes on the Shrug are at the end of the Return Pass. When you have two loops left on the hook, drop the old colour, pick up the new colour and pull through the last two loops. Use the new colour for the Forward Pass.
The shrug is worked in one panel, which is then joined at the cuffs for a short sleeve seam.
The outer edge of the panel has a border of Tunisian Honeycomb Stitch to prevent curling.
