Fibonnaci Flower
Fibonacci Flower
Mathematics and Sunflowers.
There is a famous series of numbers called the Fibonacci sequence. Often referred to as nature’s numbering system, the sequence itself appears wonderfully simple, yet it is found again and again throughout the natural world—from seashells and pinecones to flower petals and pineapples, from a grain of wheat to the spiral arms of a galaxy.
Each number in the sequence is the sum of the two preceding numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21…
Look closely at the center of a sunflower and you’ll discover two sets of spirals: one turning clockwise and the other counterclockwise. Count the spirals, and you’ll often find consecutive Fibonacci numbers, such as 34 and 55 or 55 and 89. These beautiful interwoven spirals were the inspiration for this lace design.
For the mathematicians among us: yes, I know the number of spirals in this shawl are not exact Fibonacci numbers! They have been thoughtfully adapted to create a balanced, knittable lace design while preserving the beauty and spirit of the mathematics.
