You can now purchase the Fennel pattern as part of a kit in The Fibre Co.’s online store. The kit includes 7 hanks of Luma and the pattern PDF. Learn more here.

Fennel is a generous rectangular shawl to wrap around your shoulders on a cool Summer’s evening. It features graphic moving panels using simple stitch patterns to give way to a luxurious expanse of moss (seed) stitch. Tubular selvedges finish the edges beautifully.

The large dimensions of the shawl are created by stretching the shawl whilst blocking it. This creates a fluid, open fabric that drapes beautifully. Blocking wires will help you to maintain straight edges, however, a similar effect can be achieved by threading a piece of waste yarn through the edge and pinning the waste yarn rather than the shawl. If you prefer, you could just use a lot of pins.

When using the suggested yarn, I recommend alternating hanks as you work to give an overall blended appearance.

NEEDLES
4mm (US6) straight needle or 80cm (32 in) circular needle (or size to obtain gauge)
Cable needle

EXTRAS
Tapestry needle
Stitch markers

GAUGE (AFTER BLOCKING)
21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm (4 in) measured over moss/seed stitch using 4mm (US6) needles
Please swatch carefully, as incorrect gauge will cause the shawl to come out a different size. The wrong gauge may also cause you to run out of yarn.
