Pattern Description from Wool Gathering Newsletter #11 (page 60 of The Opinionated Knitter): “Dear Knitter, Consider the advantages of knitted headgear. Knitted caps are fast and easy to make (at least, I think mine are). They draw praise and admiration, and use up odds and ends of yarn. They are warm and comfortable to wear and easy to wash. This adds up to pleasant knitting for presents, and excellent profit-making for bazaars. Here are some good caps, all in Fisherman, Homespun or 2-ply Sheepswool, on a 16” circular needle, at a GAUGE of 5 sts to 1”. I take a #5 needle; you may need a different size, depending on your knitting tension. Each cap uses under 1 skein of wool. Put in color patterns if and as you wish. (see Newsletter #2). They can be worked from wool oddments, doubled if thin, or even thribbled since patterns may well be slightly heavier than the background. For caps with heavier wool at 4 sts to 1” (3-ply Sheepswool or 2-ply Icelandic), cast on 20% less stitches.”

The early newsletters had a numbering system that overlaps the Wool Gathering and Spun Out issues. This pattern appeared in Newsletter number 11, Fall 1963.
