Falling Leaves is such a beautiful lace design for a scarf, but when worn around the neck the leaves don’t “fall” on both sides. The solution to this is a provisional cast on. Beginning at the back of the neck, one half of the scarf is knitted down. Then the provisional cast-on stitches are picked up and the second half of the scarf is knitted in the opposite direction. This pattern accompanies the Learn Something New article, “Provisional Cast On,” in this issue.
