So here’s the story with this pattern. I bought this yarn to try and enter a pattern into Berroco’s sock design contest last month but I ran out of time and then got completely side-tracked with my Irate Squirrel Sock idea. I thought and thought about this yarn, the problems with it (the lack of stretch due to its alpaca and nylon content, and it’s lack of stitch definition - not to mention its complete inability to photograph well), and I decided texture with some give was the way to go.

I had seen a stitch pattern similar to this in a book but the one in the book was way too complicated for a sock (it involved lots of cabling and brioche stitch), so I modeled my own based on the same idea. The result is a twisted rib that trails its way down the sock with patches of ribbing in between for a bit extra give. It is, of course, a top-down pattern and is pretty easy to follow. My suggestion, however, is that if you are at all concerned with the lack of give to this yarn, use another or use a larger needle size. Personally, the whole time I was knitting this I was thinking that I wish I were knitting it in Malabrigo sock instead. It would be FABULOUS in Malabrigo sock…
