Everyone Knows Pie Are Round
I love pie. Given the option between pie and cake, I’ll take the pie (unless it’s one I don’t like, such as rhubarb). Pie versus cheesecake would also be a tough decision.
This shawl uses the classic pi shawl shaping with strategic decreases to turn it into a square. The patterns in the shawl are inspired by some of my favorite pies.
The name of the shawl is inspired by the classic mathematical phrase, pi r square.
What you need
Yarn - 400 to 2400 yards of laceweight yarn. My preference is for a wool or wool/silk blend.
Needles - circular needles with good points are recommended.
Stitch markers - 4 to 8, more if desired
Dice
Bead count
If replacing nupps with beads, you will need 112 { 170, 225 }.
Gauge
Gauge is not listed as this is a shawl. Knit a square, block it, and see if you like the fabric.
Techniques
Working in the round
Centered double decreases
Lace
Nupps
A note on yardage - I knit very loosely and block aggressively. As such, I tend to use more yarn than most people. Because the shawl size is adaptable, the larger the shawl, the more yarn you will need.
Yarn substitutions
Feel free to make this shawl in whatever yarn weight or fiber you desire. It’s your shawl, and the important thing is for you to enjoy it. I wouldn’t recommend bulky, unless your car needs a cover.
Be mindful that significant changes in needle size and or yarn weight will impact the amount of yarn needed.
