Water Lily is a traditional Estonian lace pattern, which is not only visually stunning but also very interesting to knit. It has always reminded me of one of my favorite flowers, the architecturally intriguing Iris. The rich purple and violet hues of the petals were the inspiration for this design and this color story.

Evansia is my classic short row crescent shawl, worked from the top in one piece. This design starts with a delicate lace border along the top edge and then the shawl is shaped into an elegant crescent with easy garter stitch short rows. The deep dramatic lace border is worked last with the bind off creating the intricate openwork edge.

I designed the lace border to look like growing flowers, starting with the smallest buds at the top to the fully opened blooms along the bottom edge. For extra texture and pretty sparkle, all of the Evansia lace charts include beads reminiscent of dew drops shimmering on flower petals (approx. 500 6/0 4.00mm seed beads, optional).

December 27, 2016: pdf update corrects an error in the text of the pattern - on top of page 3, “Start Lace” section - the directions should read “Work Rows 1 - 4”, not “1 - 6”.

Evansia was originally published as an exclusive part of the yarnQuest kit #2.
