The Emmen Aran Hat was created in response to a request from a knitter who was making the Emmen Jumper and loved the stitch pattern so much that she wanted a matching hat. So, I designed the Emmen Hat for her – and of course for everyone else who enjoys knitting the Emmen Jumper!

One of the best things about this pattern is that two 100g hanks of aran yarn are enough to make two hats by simply swapping shade A and shade B. That means you get the joy of knitting twice – once for yourself and once to gift to a friend or loved one as a thoughtful, hand-knit surprise. Enjoy!

CONSTRUCTION
Knitted flat in one piece from the bottom up with one seam.

TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, purl, decreasing, slip stitch technique sometimes called mosaic colour work. Joining one seam. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.

YARN
One 100g hank each of WYS Croft Shetland Aran in shade A and shade B.
100% Shetland wool, 166m/182yds per 100g
I used WYS Croft Shetland Aran in solids for shade A and WYS Croft Shetland Aran in tweeds for shade B.
There is enough to make the two versions of the hat by swapping shade B for shade A and shade A for shade B.

SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
5mm.

GAUGE (tension)
18 stitches and 28 rows to 10cm square over rib pattern when slightly stretched. I obtained this gauge with 5mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.

SIZE AND FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
to fit adult head due to the nature of the rib pattern & individual gauges the finished circumference can vary from 50cm to 62cm. If the knitter gets the gauge as above the finished circumference will be approx. 54cm.
