Original hat knit in bulky wool. Pattern starts with a formula for hat cast-ons for any head size and gauge. (MATH!)

Pattern description from Crazy Aunt Purl’s Drunk, Divorced, and Covered in Cat Hair: “Great for covering wrinkles on your forehead.”

Ingredients:

  • Yarn: 1 skein Crystal Palace Iceland wool in orange, plus 1 skein Crystal Palace Iceland wool in pink for a stripe.
  • Needles: size 11 circular needles, 16 inches long; size 11 double-pointed needles (SCARY!!!)
  • Wine Selection: Bonterra Organic Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Stitch Marker: I use the heart-shaped ring my parents got me when I was fifteen.
  • Goal: Make a hat from any yarn without a pattern

Notes:

  • I went with 72 as my amount of cast-on stitches instead of 73 or 74, because it is a number I know how to divide easily (for the decreases), and also because I’m tired of making gigantor hats. Always err on the side of rounding down on the amount of stitches cast on. Hats are supposed to fit a bit snugly.
  • A Note about Twisted Stitches: Make sure your stitches are not twisted! That means the knotty-looking part of the stitches are hanging downward and nothing is twisty on your needles.
  • Note to OCD, Type-A Knitters: My joins always look sloppy. Hopefully I’ll get better at this, but look, this is a roll-brim hat. No one will ever see it. MOVE ON.
  • A Note About Adding a Different Color Yarn: When you’re ready to add a new color of yarn to any project, cut the yarn off the first color and leave a few inches of yarn tail. (You will weave the ends in later after the hat is completed.) To add the new yarn color for your strip, hold the new color of yarn tight and begin knitting a new stitch in the contrast color, leaving a yarn tail of three to five inches (for weaving in later). It’s important to hold the yarn tightly as you knit the new stitches in the new color so there aren’t any holes or gaps.
