Growing like sedimentary layers of rock and earth, this hat takes form.

Earth Graffiti is a super baggy hat, knit mainly in the one-color brioche stitch. The purl ridge and color blocking add dimension and interest to the back and top. This is a slight variation of one of my other hat patterns, Pink Graffiti, using worsted weight yarn for a chunkier fabric and quicker knit.

This hat would make a GREAT project if you want to try out the brioche stitch! There are no brioche increases or decreases, and it’s a wonderful transition to two-color brioche!

Size: One size for men and women; finished measurements are about 20” circumference by 11” height. The brim can be folded up for a more fitted and warmer hat!

Yarn: 212 yds / 193 m Worsted weight
Main color (MC): 160 yds / 146 m
Contrast color 1 (CC1): 22 yds / 20 m
Contrast color 2 (CC2): 30 yds / 27 m

Shown in:
MC: 1 skein Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 in color Charcoal Gray (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 220 yds/100g)
CC1: 1 skein Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 Heathers in color Cordovan (100% wool; 220 yds/100g)
CC2: 1 skein Cascade Yarns Eco Cloud in color Dove Gray (70% Merino Wool, 30% Alpaca; 164 yds/100g)

You can certainly substitute 100% alpaca for even more drape.

Needles: US 7/4.5mm circular needle or DPN’s. I used the Magic Loop method for knitting in the round.

Gauge: 16 sts x 21 rows = 4” in brioche stitch

Other tools needed: tapestry needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker for noting the beginning of round.
