Dutch Shawl Lace
This shawl lace is from ca. 1888 Weldon’s Practical Needlework, vol. 1, p.9. There are 2 pattern rows with the wrong side row just purl across except for the selvage stitches. There’s a multiple of 4 stitches + 3 edge stitches + 2 selvage stitches. When blocked straight, the stitch pattern will have a slight diagonal look to it. I’ve also posted the coordinating Dutch Shawl Border on Ravelry.
I tried putting a “YO, SSK” between the main columns but it resulted in different sized eyelets. Feel free to improvise with this lace. The swatch has 5 repeats and is 2.75 inches wide when blocked to gauge.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, YO, SSK, PSSO over 3 stitches and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
40 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of a 25-stitch strip at gauge.
