October is harvest season. The nights are turning crisp, the leaves are turning colour, and the apples are ripe for picking in the orchards. Canada’s harvest feast falls in the middle of this month, and fruit pies are a major part of our celebrations. With the wide variety of apples to choose from, an apple pie is the obvious choice to crown a turkey dinner, and a Dutch apple pie, with its sweet buttery crumb crust and mix of tart and sweet apples and old world spices is the perfect variation.
The Dutch Apple Pi shawl is a more than circular shawl that starts with a garter tab but quickly turns to pi shawl shaping to create its round profile. The motifs in this pattern are chosen to represent wedges and slices of apple stacked into a dense and delicious pie. Dig in!
Materials Needed:
- @1700 yards light lace or cobweb weight yarn sample worked in a plied alpaca/silk blend cobweb weight yarn
- 3.25mm (US size 3) circular needle or straight needles or size needed for gauge
Optional Materials:
- 437 stitch markers to mark repeats
- 2 stitch markers to mark border stitches
Gauge: 32 stitches x 40 rows over 4”/10cm in stocking stitch before blocking.
Gauge is given before blocking because the severity of blocking varies widely between lace knitters. Note that I do not consider gauge to be essential for a lace shawl. Instead, I recommend swatching for a fabric you like. If your gauge is markedly different from that given in the pattern, you will need to adjust your yardage accordingly.
